I Bought a Canon 7D

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

AND I LOVE IT! The 7D is great in low light situations like portraits in a house for fun and night shots. The camera is overall much faster than my old XTi with it being 8fps and a newer and faster processor. I have been experimenting with a neutral density filter as well on my Canon 17-40mm f4L lens. Below is an amazing pic I took using it. You can see the full size on flickr. It was taken at f22 and ISO 100, you can see that there is a little bit of noise though so I am trying to figure out why. But enjoy the new pictures as I enjoy my new camera!

Creating A Depth Divider

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

1. Start off with a colour that is more grey in nature in the colour
tint. This will help with how it looks when we use an overlay later
on in the tutorial. I am using #1e6887

In this tutorial you will learn how to use the Brush and Pencil tools with a couple of blend modes to create a nice divider that emphasizes depth for your next design.

This is the final product:

1. Create a new document and start off with a colour that is not too bright or dark. This will help with how it looks when we use an overlay later on in the tutorial. I am using #1e6887. (Web 2.0 Design colours are often muted in nature/have a greyish dull look to them. Select these colours from the middle and right sides of the colour picker.)

2. Zoom in as far as you can go. Select your Pencil Tool (Shift +B) and draw a thin 1px line of black on a new layer like so:  (You don’t want the line to go too long we are going to make it look longer later on)

3. Make a white line the same length directly underneath it.

4. Set the blend mode of that layer to overlay and lower the opacity to about 50%
img4

5. On the same layer go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. You want an angle of 0 degrees and around 200px in distance.

6. Create a new layer. Take a soft rounded brush (0 Hardness) and increase the size to the width of the line you just created. Make sure the colour is white (#ffffff). Center the brush with the line and click once.

7. Take you marquee selection tool (M) and select the entire circle that is above the line you created. Hit delete to make a semi-circle.
img7

8. Set the now half circle layer to overlay and lower the opacity to around 30%.
img8

9. Repeat steps 6-8 again on a new layer with black instead of white, cutting off the bottom of the circle instead of the top, and placing the brush slightly below center. You may need to play with the opacity to get your desired result.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Take this and make it over and over again in many different colours. I want to see how you use it so please, leave a comment!
